Trombonist Haim Avitsur has premiered over 50 works for trombone solo, chamber
music, and orchestra. In New York, he has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Noonday Concerts at Trinity Church Wall Street, Mannes College
of Music, and the Aaron Copland School of Music. His chamber music appearances include Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, WQXR, New York’s Classical Radio
Station, Bard College, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Mr. Avitsur has presented master classes and workshops at the Aaron Copland School of
Music, NY, the Sentor School of Music, Syracuse University, NY, Stanford University, CA, and the Tel-Aviv Music Center, Tel-Aviv, Israel.
Highlights from past seasons include a recording with percussionist Glen Velez, a concert with the Israeli Composers of New York at Makor, a recital of music for trombone and electronic sounds at Bar-Ilan University, Ramat-Gan, Israel, and a
performance at the FLEA Theater in New York City.
In January of 2004 Mr. Avitsur premiered the re-written version of “Elegy for
Trombone and String Quartet” by Joan Tower. Ms. Tower, unhappy with the original version of the piece, met with Mr. Avitsur and the Degas String Quartet to work on the
revised edition. Mr. Avitsur has a long history of working directly with renowned composers, and is currently collaborating with Christopher Kaufman (CHIRON
Performing Arts), Mr. Todd Gabriel (Hurley School of Music, Louisiana) and Igal Myrtenbaum.
Mr. Avitsur has just returned from a successful performance and master class tour in
North Carolina. Currently, Mr. Avitsur is premiering four new pieces for trombone written especially for him in a concert presented by Music Under Construction, a
non-profit fine arts organization located in Manhattan.
Mr. Avitsur has been named to the faculty of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia where he will serve as principal trombone of the Charlottesville
and Symphony Orchestra. He was adjunct faculty at Queens College, New York from 1999-2001 and in the spring of 2001 Mr. Avitsur joined the faculty of the
Mannes College of Music Extension Division. His book “Routines for Trombone, a book for the advanced trombone player” is due to be published by Mel Bay Publications (MB#20858) in 2005.
